Day Two

Don't worry there is a day one just not photography wise cause for me it was more than reconnaissance. Our journey begun from here, at the village of Kastanies. A small village right at the border with Turkey and the river Ardas graciously running along its outskirts. We arrived there on Christmas day and there was no snow, we explored the area and decided to visit the place for sunset and then for a sunrise the following morning before we move on further south along the river Evros. Unfortunately the sunset was only generous to justeline and I don't have a picture from that day. During the night snow begun to fall and the morning after everything was covered with it. The sun never made its appearance that morning but this wasn’t a drawback for me cause the bluish tint that was diffused throughout the scene by the early morning light was something I found very pleasing.

I had two choices of lenses a wide angle and a telephoto. My first instinct was to mount the wide angle and go for big trying to capture the whole place in one shot. It didn’t work out cause the scene was consisted from a lot of details and trying to include them all in one frame meant that there were many main subjects and the eye could not draw focus to only one. I switched to the telephoto wore my boots and headed right to the center of the river where a small waterfall was forming due to a discontinuity of the riverbed.

I had spotted that boat the day before and I liked its placement and orientation. The reason why I chose to use a telephoto for this frame is that I wanted to include the rocks the boat and the trees all in one shot but keep them all close together. Had I used a wide angle lens I would still be able to frame all three elements in but they would look a lot further apart from each other. A telephoto diminishes depth in an image. So I placed my tripod in the water mounted the camera and put on a polarizing filter so I could control the reflection of the water and the one of the wet rocks and also saturate the colours a bit more. A small aperture was needed for maximum depth of field cause I wanted the whole frame in focus. This is a ten second exposure hence the water looks so smooth and silky. I was very fortunate that the flow of the river was very smooth and steady and the boat didn’t move at all. Another factor that also played an important role was the absence of wind. Any movement in the trees would have spoilt the feeling of a frozen and motionless scene.

This is a gorgeous shot. When you did the original focusing, did you focus in on the white rocks at the front of the frame?
