Artistic or Postcard?

Journal Entry: Sun Jun 21, 2009, 7:31 AM

The big question

First of all let me explain to you what is my definition of artistic and what of a postcard. A postcard is a very target specific photograph with sole purpose to advertise the merits of a specific place. Its merits are usually a good composition and technical excellence without though any distinct characteristics of the person who took this picture or lacking the ability to create any sort of sentiments to the viewer. Artistic on the other hand is a landscape photograph that even though it isn't technically excellent all the time, has the ability to convey some of the feelings that the photographer was experiencing while we was taking the picture. Don't get me wrong I don't condemn the whole postcard type of photographs. One might say that I too take more postcard kind of picture instead of artistic.

What triggered this whole debate in me was a comment I read on a forum concerning Yann Arthus Bertrand's Home project. And I quote "Even though Yann Arthur-Bertrand for many friends of photography doesn't meet up with the artistic definition of photography the film Home is well worth watching".

So I wonder why for some people excellent work like that is not considered to be artistic? It meets all my criteria about being artistic, are my criteria that wrong? For those of you who are not familiar with Yann Arthus Bertrand's work here is a closer to home example since if you watch me I believe you are more familiar with my work. The road to Rivendell when posted to a forum dedicated to critique was greeted with mixed emotions. Some said it was great some though said that even though it was technically excellent and looks great as postcard i failed to take advantage of the situation and create an artistic photograph. I don't mind people saying that and I am not looking for praise, it is just that it came as a shock to me cause even though I do consider some of my photographs to be postcard like this isn't one of them. On the contrary when I developed it i had this feeling that yes it is a landmark well photographed in Greece and everybody stops to take a picture of this bridge when the pass by it, but my view taking advantage of the situation is unique. Being insecure as I am I take it that everybody else is right except me and I am in the process of re-evaluating my beliefs about artistic or not. So what do you think? What should a landscape photograph have in order to be considered artistic and if you can show me what you consider artistic and what not. You can vote at the Poll but I'd rather have your answer here since there are no restricting options.

Οκ..

In all my photography-ignorance, I think if "The road to Rivendell" was a postcard it would much more focused on the bridge itself than on the rocks, meaning, the bridge would be in the center or something. The angle you use there (I think it's about the angle, sorry if it's not :P ) makes me look at it from bottom to top, waiting for what's coming next, it's mysterious, calm and distant. Makes me wonder what's beyond the arch, because it's misty. It doesn't make me go just "wow, cute little rocks and cool little bridge, yey!". See what I mean? ;P

Dunno if I answered your question. But well, I agree with your concept of postcard and artistic :)

I think landscape photography is very artistic. Not anyone can capture the environment in a way that gives it justice. You have to know angles and lighting, and different camera techniques and settings. Because part of the enjoyment of the outdoors is being in the moment, the smells and sounds and what not, to impact someone with simply the aesthetics takes talent. There isn't a model in that frame with a pose or an expression, "a look" - it's just nature. And a lot of people don't appreciate it. But a great photographer can help people see the stunning beauty of our home.

I find your photography truly artistic. Postcards are just pretty - your photos are captivating.

I'm not an expert, I can't offer deeper insight...

I totally understand what you mean, i for one think that if Yann Arthus Bertrand-s work isnt artistic, then what is ? because we are not centered on human beings, that doesnt mean that shapes cant create art, a lot of landscapes can transmit feelings, most of the great artists who are shooting nature have created a lot of wonderful work, who surely is mind-blowing, the lines, the composition, and the own personal approach does prove the artistic meaning of each good nature photographer.. when postcards in my own view, are technically good photographs, that are more intended for the viewer, to please the viewer, and a large type of people, art is totally more "selective"

Art still is a vast domain, most people like to see it their own way, so they start putting limits to it, i think that we-ll never find a good definition for art, since its based on feelings, and these things you cant monitor in the "right" way since they are subjective, and each person does experience them in a different way..

I was just reading a book about photography, and it starts by comparing the early photographers in the 18th century with painters at that time, and how slowly photography did replace paintings, anyway, a lot of people who were not considered artists, who were just "journalists" at that time, have created great images, and after their death, they were praised, and created a style that now its well known

Nah, i know what i wrote its pretty confusing lol, its a bit late for me now, and im a bit tired, but i want you to know, that we all experience doubt, especially those of us who want to get better, and each bad review, makes us put a lot questions, anyway its always easier to look at another person, to judge, so trust me, your photos surely are not postcards, they surely have a personal approach, and i find them really interesting :handshake: and really inspiring, so keep up the good work

There are too many options about what is art and what is not. I won't say, because I don't really know. I like what I like, but I know that my shots don't qualify as art. I'm not an artist and don't consider myself one.

If this is a technical debate then I am wrong in even replying to your journal as I am dumb as a sack of hammers where the technical aspects of photography are concerned.

There's two categories I would lump together as pictorial photography and I think they both follow the same formula. That would be postcard and calendar landscapes. Now I am think about commercial giveaway calendars not specialised ones. I think these shot all follow a formula of bright sunny and pictorial. Their aim is to portray a scene in the most atractive way. I don't want to take that sort of landscape. A true artistic landscape shot should invoke emotion, wonder, awe and even disbelieve. As I pointed out in the poll and for your watchers the Australia Peter Eastway to me is a master in this [link];PicNo=2
