Day Nine

Last stop of our journey was the city of Kastoria at the western region of Macedonia in Greece. We would spend 2 nights there before moving further north to a tiny village at the borders with Albania.

Kastoria had proved to be the most picturesque place of our vacations. There is one thing you can be certain about this place, that you can never predict the weather. We had set off about an hour before dawn hoping for a nice sunrise but unfortunately it never happened. The sky was overcast and the sun never made its appearance. We weren't very much disappointed though cause the slight fog was creating wonderful images around the lake shore. We set off with justeline to drive along the shoreline stopping every 100 meters to take a photo, mostly of boats resting on the still and icy waters of the lake. We must have spent about three hours doing that before we reached the spot where this image was taken.

There are two types of photo, one where the photographer has to work for it trying to get the best possible angle and wait for the best available light, and there is the type of photo where the scenery is just there and all one has to do is pick up the camera and press the shutter release button. This picture is one of the second type. The warming sun has cleared most of the fog and had found a patch through the clouds and a wonderful directional light was illuminating the town right in front of me. All I had to do was stop the car get the camera and take the shot before the sun disappear behind a cloud. I did use the a polarizing filter to remove the reflections from the rooftops and make those patches of red stand out against the dominant blue. It is a 50/50 image cause to me it was all about symmetry and any other framing wouldn't work for me. The reason why you can see the reflection of the city so clear is cause the lake was frozen and that patch of ice provided the perfect mirror.
